Serving Communities, Building Skills
Senior Service America’s partner organizations place seniors in jobs that serve community needs. Local government agencies and community service organizations, running on tight budgets, welcome the addition of dedicated workers whose employment is funded through Title V of the Older Americans Act.
Some of the organizations served by our Senior Aides include:
BAMA (Better Activities Make All-Around) Kids, Alabama:
Plans activities that serve as alternatives to substance abuse, teen pregnancy, delinquency, violence and other negative behavior in youth and provides innovative support for families. Senior Aides work as intermediaries to keep parents informed about BAMA Kids activities and help mentor youth.
The Arcadia Parish Tourist Commission, Louisiana:
Educates tourists from all over the world about Cajun and Creole culture. Senior Aides meet guests and share stories about their hometown, Crowley, Louisiana.
Relatives as Parents Program/ Petal Association for Families, Mississippi:
Supports relatives (primarily grandparents) who are raising children. Senior Aides provide information, assist with outreach and help with counseling service activities for caregivers.
Nishna Heritage Museum, Iowa:
Holds a unique collection of local and state history available to the local public and schoolchildren. Two Senior Aides currently serve as Assistant Directors, and one plans to use the experience to establish another non-profit historical center in the area.
Working initially in these temporary community jobs, seniors gain valuable new skills. But the work does not stop here. Senior Service America and its partners help seniors gain permanent employment in both the public and private sectors of their communities.
