Baltimore City Recognizes Participant of the Year

The Baltimore City Health Department held its SCSEP Recognition Ceremony at the War Memorial in Baltimore on May 18, 2005.

This event included speeches and special presentations from various state and community leaders including, Ria Moore Benedict, Chief of Older Worker Programs at the U.S. Department of Labor; Renee Cohen of Congressman Ben Cardin’s Office; John Stewart of the Baltimore City Commission on Aging and Retirement Education; Francine Childs of the Baltimore City Health Department; and State Senator Nathaniel McFadden.

Special award presentations were also planned, including the debut of the SCSEP Participant of the Year. This year's award was given to Emma Johnson, 82, who was chosen for going above and beyond her assigned training duties with her host agency. Ms. Johnson enrolled in the program in June of 2000 after the death of her husband. She serves as a receptionist at St. Peter's Adult Learning Center, a facility where developmentally challenged and handicapped adults learn skills to live independently. She is a grandmother figure for the students who are often found visiting with her.

Home Depot was also honored as Employer of the Year at the ceremony.
