Tennessee Bands Together to Host Statewide Open Houses

As part of a statewide effort to promote National Employ Older Workers Week, Alexian Senior Neighbors of Chattanooga, Senior Services in Memphis, and the Northwest Tennessee Human Resource Agency (NTHRA) in Martin hosted open houses at career centers in their communities.

Oh behalf of the state of Tennessee, Governor Phil Breseden made a proclamation of the week. He also encouraged visitors to use the opportunity to view the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development's new Boomer Career Web site, which assists older workers with employment information. City of Jackson Honors Host Agencies at Ceremony

National Employ Older Workers Week turned into a month-long celebration for the City of Jackson Senior Aides Program. Project director Jesse Brown planned events ranging from awards ceremonies to fashion shows to mark the week.

Host agency partners of the City of Jackson's Senior AIDES Program were honored at a ceremony on September 21, 2005. Honorees included, Dotty's Day Care, Amazing Kinder Kollege, Neighborhood Christian Center, Mississippi State Veterans Home, Triumph Village Child Development Center, City of Jackson, Nutrition Program, New Foundation Day Care Center and the Coalition for Citizens with Disabilities. Jackson's Mayor Frank Melton gave remarks at the event and proclaimed Employ Older Workers Week for the city.

A senior fashion show was also held on September 23 at the Jackson Medical Mall. Attendees were treated to great music while fashions ranging from sportswear to formal attire were modelled.

Senior Resources of Guilford Hosts Celebration

On September 23, Greensboro, North Carolina project director Carol Wiley recognized the accomplishments and successful placements of her participants at a celebration for Employ Older Workers Week. Job developer Brenda Watlington was present to provide encouragement to participants in the program. Many were encouraged by her words, as well as by the positive message they received from a sneak preview of Senior Service America's new SCSEP video.

City of Kankakee "Bridges the Gap"

In honor of National Employ Older Workers Week, the City of Kankakee participated in the community's annual "Bridging the Gap" day, an informative day for senior citizens held at Olivet University. Three of the project's participants worked as greeters and displayed information about the SCSEP program for the 175 seniors who attended the event.

Statewide Recognition Event for Massachusetts SCSEP Participants

The State House set the scene for this year's celebration of National Employ Older Workers Week in Massachusetts. Kenyia Elisa-McLaren of the City of Boston's Senior Aides Program assisted in planning the event with the state's Title V director, Gene Williams.

The City of Boston honored the Jewish Memorial Hospital in Roxbury as an outstanding host agency. Senior Aides Francois Blaise and Mary Doherty were also recognized as outstanding participants in the program for their success in finding unsubsidized employment.

Former participants from the Elder Services of Cape Cod and the Islands who successfully found jobs through the program were honored at the event, including Richard Burchill, Laura Haskell, Joy Johnson, Barbara Messier, Susan Patterson and Raymond Viera.

The employers who hired these participants were also honored such as, Dennis Council on Aging, Fleming's Donut Shack, Job Training and Employment Corporation, Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Orleans District Court.

Legislators serving the districts where the employees and employers reside also recognized employees and their employers for their accomplishments.
