SCSEP a Lifeline for N.C. Worker
At the Employment Security Commission office in Boone, N.C., SCSEP participant Dennis Waters, 59, greets and guides anxious job-seekers. Two years ago, this skilled carpenter’s assistant couldn’t find work and had to move into a homeless shelter. He may have to return there now if SCSEP funding cuts eliminate his assignment.
SCSEP Program
The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is the largest federally-funded program for older adults who seek civic engagement plus employment and training assistance. In 2010, more than 125,000 SCSEP participants—women and men 55+—were paid to work part-time in local programs and organizations, many of them assisting other older adults.
